KC A’s Homewall in Birmingham, AL

    KC A. // Birmingham, AL

When did you build your wall?
Spring 2020 – started about 4 weeks into COVID lockdowns

How long did it take you to build?
Elapsed time was about 2 weeks, but spread out in spurts of a couple hours each. Could have been completed in one day if necessary.

Not including holds and padding, how much did it cost you to build?
$300? Probably overdid it with extra reinforcement but wanted it to be bomber and pass the wife test.

Did anything in particular inspire your wall design?
Knew it needed to go on back of the deck so slab style it was. No angles, just the miniest of El Caps.

What was the most difficult aspect of the design and build?
Waiting! Waiting for paint to dry. Waiting for drill batteries to charge while drilling holes for t-nuts. Waiting for holds to arrive!

    What would you do differently?
Phase two will include an additional section of width and also include an angle. Again, have to pass wife approval.

    What is your favorite aspect?
I have a ton of variety on a very small space. Having t-nuts on a 4”x4” grid gives me the freedom to set and reset at will. My wall is a slab so I have a lot of balance/endurance training available. My crimp game has come a long way during COVID as a result.

Any words of wisdom to aspiring homewallers?
    Order holds early…and be patient.

Do you have any connection to climbing brands or gyms?
High Point Climbing & Fitness in Birmingham is my home gym but no affiliation. I have ordered holds from several different companies.
