When did you build your wall? Was it a “COVID baby”?
2018 when I moved into my new house.

How long did it take you to build and what did that time look like?
3-4 weekends putting in 1-2 hours each weekend. Looked like general framing for a long time. My neighbor thought I was putting up shelving, lol.

Not including holds and padding, how much did it cost you to build? Any surprises there?
Under $100 (excluding T-Nuts too). Probably around $200 with T-Nuts. No surprise as this is my second wall. I built one in my old house.

What are you doing for padding?
Mad Rock Crash Pad.

What was your primary incentive for the wall? Did anything in particular inspire your wall design?
Home training, entertainment, get my kids stoked in climbing. Not really–just tried to work with the space that I had. I had limited room because we still need to park our cars in the garage in the winter.

What was the most difficult aspect of the design and build?
Space considerations. Wanted it to be big enough to be useful and entertaining, but had to figure out how to allow the cars to still fit.

What would you do differently?
Nothing. I dig it.

Did you make any mistakes along the way or choose to re-do any aspects?
Nope. Like I said, this is my second iteration from my last house, so I knew what I was doing this time around!

What is your favorite aspect?
I like that it’s tall enough that I can top rope my kids.

How often do you use the wall? Do you think you’ll still use it as much when the gyms fully open back up?
3-4 days a week. Yes, I do. I like to get a 30 minute endurance session on my lunches. Now… When COVID is gone and I have to go back into the office, that might go down.

Any words of wisdom to aspiring homewallers?
Splurge on the “industrial” T-Nuts with the screws. They are an absolute PAIN to put in, but in 2 years, I have yet to have a spinner. Love ’em and they’re worth the cost. I get mine from Escape: https://escapeclimbing.com/products/hditnut

Do you have any connection to climbing brands or gyms?
Nope, but if any climbing brands want to hook up a “nobody” climber, I won’t turn you down!
